READING FOR: 10/13/21
- NOVEL:
- Chapters: 5-10 Pages 195-327
- Chapter 5 – Pages 195-203:
- I am very confused about what is going on in the beginning of this chapter.
- What does he mean when he talks about a hammer? (197)
- That is awful what his parents said to him after what happened with the man. (200-201)
- “I wanted to get out of my skin.” (201) I can relate to this feeling.
- I hate how they described this scene, I hate that this happened to Wallace, and I hate how his parents acted afterwards. (201)
- “There comes a time when you have to stop being who you were, when you have to let the past stay where it is, frozen and impossible.” (203)
- I honestly think this chapter wasn’t that important.
- Chapter 6 – Pages 207-246:
- All Wallace can say is “fair enough.” (207)
- Why does he bring up/think about Henrik again?
- I don’t get the whole part about the crappy houses… (208)
- This book is pretty modern since they mentioned a vape pen. (209)
- Miller is always looking out for Wallace. (210)
- Ygnve tells them about his scar that he notices. (211)
- I don’t see Cole and Vincent lasting much longer. (212)
- Why would Wallace say he hates Miller? (213)
- What does he mean by “No wonder the house is so quiet.” (214)
- Miller wants Wallace to stay. (216)
- Miller called Wallace exhausting and they started to get into an argument. (218)
- “Like a toy.” (218)
- The argument is getting more intense. (220)
- Why does Wallace want to bring Miller’s anger upon him? (222)
- Miller tells Wallace that he hurt someone really badly in his past. (223)
- Miller just wants someone to want him, someone to be on his side. (225)
- Interesting way to put that feeling. (228)
- “Perhaps friendship is really nothing but controlled cruelty.” (229)
- Why did Wallace think that something bad was going to happen to them? (230)
- Miller is mad that Wallace left him after all of the stuff he told him. (232)
- Vincent and Cole are holding hands so Wallace thinks that they must have fixed what was going on. (234)
- Vincent pretty much just accused and verbally attacked Wallace. (238)
- The novel brings up toys again. (239)
- Wallace blew up on Miller. (243)
- I feel like we all feel that way at one point or another. (244)
- Where are they talking/touching each other? (245)
- Chapter 7 – Pages 249-282:
- I have a fear of birds too! (249)
- Wallace thought about his father. (250)
- Talks abou what Wallace majored in undergraduate. (250)
- Katie is not doing this right now are you kidding me? (253)
- Simone asks Wallace to come to her office. (255)
- This entire conversation is just making me so confused, why would Simone be saying these things, and I hate how this makes Wallace feel and how he doesn’t feel like he can speak up. (256-257)
- It just jumped to a completely whole new scene and I feel like this novel bounces around a lot without telling us. (258)
- I watch the med students play frisbee on my walks in between classes and it also gives me a sense of peace. (260)
- Wallace feels left out from his friends. (261)
- So I think that the chapter started off from a new spot, but on page 258 it takes us back to how chapter 6 ended.
- Wallace thinks about his brother and father. (262)
- “Wallace feels sorry for her, but then also for himself, because this has been his life since he came to this place, alone among white people.” (264)
- The first paragraph, the entire thing, gave me chills. (266)
- Awww Wallace and Brigit were laughing and then they both just started sobbing together. They just let it all out. (267)
- Second paragraph, wow! (268)
- I also like vanilla ice cream! (269)
- Wallace was talking about bodies and what good bodies look like and then talked about Miller! (271)
- Wallace tells Brigit about the talk him and Simmone had. (273)
- Brigit talks about how she hates working around a bunch of white people and how she’s just a face to them. And then her and Walalce talk about if he were to leave or not. (275)
- Wallace can’t fall asleep so he calls Miller but he doesn’t pick up so Wallace just keeps calling him. (279)
- Miller goes over to Wallace’s drunk. (280)
- Ummm I’m confused on why Miller is acting like this?? What wolf? (282)
- Chapter 8 – Pages 287-304:
- Miller is talking about the three little pigs story. (287)
- Wallace and Miller are arguing. (287)
- Miller is upset that he told Wallace all this personal stuff about him and for when Wallace left in the middle of the night. (288)
- What Miller said, isn’t that kind of how Wallace feels? (288)
- The third paragraph where Miller talks about how he’s feeling, made me tear up a little bit. That feeling sucks. (289)
- Miller admits that he likes Wallace and Wallace realizes that other people have feelings too. (289)
- Graphic sex sceanes. (291, 295)
- “What is there to say after that, after such a violation?” (293)
- Why did Miller let Wallace punch him so many times? (296)
- “And the world went on. It always does. The world doesn’t care about you or me or any of this. The world just keeps on going.” (300)
- Chapter 9 – Pages 307-319:
- Wallace and Miller wake up in the middle of the night and are hungry. (307)
- Wallace ends up cooking for them. (308)
- “Stay here and suffer, or exit and drown, he thinks.” (310)
- Wallace thinks about a future with Miller. (311)
- It also mentions time and I feel as though time is a big factor of the novel. (311)
- Why are they going to the lake? (314)
- Wallace can’t swim. (315)
- That is the third or fourth time the novel has mentioned something about birds. (315)
- Miller and Wallace talk about god. (317)
- Showing someone your spot is a meaningful thing. (319)
- Chapter 10 – Pages 323-327:
- I like how this chapter showed us them all meeting Wallace for the first time (325)
- “Walalce was giddy, almost sick with excitement, to be in this place, among these people – it was the accomplishment of a long-held wish, a dream come true.” (326)
- On the last page of the entire novel, Wallace and all of his friends cheers “to life”. (327)
